Petrified Forest National Park Another Walk in the Park

This is a short walk about 15 minutes drive from Portland, Victoria. Parking is available at the end of Blowholes road, located in the Discovery Bay Coastal Park on the western side of Cape Bridgewater. There is a path to the Petrified Forest from the carpark. The petrified forest was formed when Moonah trees became buried under drifting sand.

Driving through Petrified Forest National Park Midwest Wanderer

I hiked the entire Petrified Forest Loop, which comes to approximately 10 miles and includes a section of the Maah Daah Hey trail. The actual petrified forest areas are other worldly and a must see. I encountered Pronghorns and Bison while hiking the Maah Daah Hey section. The trail has great views of the Badlands during the entire hike.

Petrified Forest National Park

Petrified wood, also known as Fossilized Wood, is fossilized remnants of ancient trees from the Paleocene Era. The name "Petrified" came from the Greek "petro" that means "stone" implying that "wood turns to stone".

The petrified forest trailhead is located on the western boundary of the park. The drive from Medora to the trailhead is approximately 30 minutes on gravel roads. There are small signs indicating turns, but turn-by-turn instructions are below: Take I-94 westbound to exit 23. At the end of the exit ramp, turn right on Forest Service Road 730.

Driving. Petrified Forest National Park is located along Highway 40, in between the cities of Holbrook and Chambers. If you're coming in from Holbrook, head east on Hwy 40 for 24 miles and take exit 311 left onto Park Rd. If heading in from Chambers, head west on Hwy 40 for 22 miles and take a right into the park.
